Mace completes first of two mental health units in North Wales

09/03/2010
A Mace health team has successfully completed a new older adult mental health unit for Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Mace has been providing project management services for the North Wales NHS Trust on the project since an external review showed its mental health services to be unsuitable, run-down and had a layout that was confusing for patients and difficult for staff.
Completed in January on time and to budget, the new older adult unit comprises 24 single bed units with accommodation split into day and night areas providing external space for therapies. Considerable effort has been made to reduce typical hospital associations with a fresh and light-filled environment for patients. Maximum use of natural light has also been used to create a therapeutic and calming environment to aid recovery.
Not only is the new unit spacious and comfortable for patients, it is also adheres to the specifications required by environmental assessors BRE. By using BRE's Green Guide Category A material where possible, and keeping energy levels required to heat, light and ventilate the building to a minimum, it has reduced running costs and increased sustainability.
Mace project manager, Liz Hartley said: "The older mental health unit delivers an essential building for the hospital that will serve the community, service users, carers and staff for generations to come."
The project team will continue to work on site to deliver the new adult mental health unit for the Trust which is due for completion in summer 2010.
