Mace project triumphs at the 2009 Sustainability Awards

25/11/2009

Hampshire County Council's headquarters, Elizabeth II Court, has been awarded the accolade "Sustainable Project of the Year" at last night's Sustainability Awards beating off competition from a rival Mace project Crawley Library. Mace worked with the council to turn their 1960s office block into one of the most sustainable working environments in the country. The headquarters was also used at the first ever UK-GBC Conference this month called "Making Sustainable Development Happen" as a casestudy to show the strides the UK is making in the green and sustainable building sector.

Elizabeth II Court is predicted to be BREEAM 'Excellent' and to produce a very low level of CO2 emissions based on the results of extensive early design modelling and analysis. It is now well on the way to meeting the government's 2050 target for carbon reduction and represents a remarkable achievement given the constraints of the existing building and the challenging urban context.

The building is truly deserving of this attention. Carbon emission levels have been reduced from 90kg CO2/m2/annum to a targeted level of 30kg CO2/m2/annum a total reduction of approx 70%. The renovation project has also achieved 30% space utilisation improvement for the council and total savings of £200,000 on running costs per annum.
