Two Mace Group projects win at London Civil Engineering Awards

11/03/2010

At its London Civil Engineering Awards 2010, designed to recognise engineering excellence in the capital, the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) named its top London projects of 2010 and two of the five projects recognised are being delivered by Mace Group.

The "buildings" award went to the Shard for its unique construction methodology. The "greatest contribution to London" award went to the London 2010 Olympic Park enabling projects on which Mace is delivery partner as part of CLM.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Many said that the credit crunch would halt the construction of Renzo Piano's visionary Shard of Glass... I am delighted that the 2012 Olympic Park took the top award. The calibre of this year's entries are world-class, stating loud and clear that London is the place to be for a career in engineering excellence."

Judgments on engineering excellence were based on criteria such as creativity and innovation, sustainability and environmental sensitivity and benefits to the client and wider public.

Mark Whitby, chair of the judging panel gave the Shard project a special mention: "At 87 stories and 310 metres in height the Shard was never going to be an easy building to construct. But set adjacent to London Bridge station and amidst the foundations of a 20-storey tower the challenge becomes formidable. In such circumstances engineering comes into its own and celebrating these works at a time before they are overshadowed by the building itself is more than justified - a work in progress to be commended."
