This project is a fantastic example of how a critical construction programme can be delivered to a high quality, on time and within cost. It's a great credit to the partnering approach adopted by all parties involved in the project.

Information

Mace was appointed to undertake programme and financial management duties to assist Brunel University with the implementation and execution of its current estates strategy.

The scope of works included not only project management of the building works but also the management of the preparation of a ten-year master plan, gaining outline planning consent for the master plan, assisting with the negotiation of Section 106 agreements, securing vacant possession of sites to be sold and managing decant strategies to amalgamate three separate campuses into one.

Mace also project managed the provision of a new indoor athletics and sports centre which included the upgrading of the existing facilities and the provision of two new state of the art buildings. One to house a 100m indoor international standard running track and the other to house an indoor international standard netball court. It is intended that this will be the home of the England netball team.

New build projects included a new, naturally vented health/social work building, which incorporates an open plan academic environment - a UK first for a university faculty. In addition a significant extension was added to the School of Architecture that incorporated the new Chancellery Board Room.

Mace is currently project managing the new Eastern Gateway Building. This £32m project comprises the construction of a flagship building to house the main university reception, Business and Law School, Art Gallery and a 450-seat auditorium, which will be used for both public and University performances.

Mace provided project management for circa 2,400 new student accommodation beds, across three phases. The most significant phase was the delivery of a 1,400 bed village incorporating 17 blocks, social amenities building, CHP and associated infrastructure works. The design and works were undertaken to a very high standard including attaining a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating. Paul Thomas, director of resources and operations, commented on the progress of the project and working with Mace Group:

"This was an exemplary project. As in any project there were technical challenges along the way but the acceptance of and adherence to a partnering approach by all those involved meant issues were dealt with swiftly and with minimum distraction from the job in hand. The success of the project is clear to see and is reflected in the enjoyment of the 1,400 students who now live in the Isambard complex."
