Information
In 2008 the St Keyna School in the county of Bath and North East Somerset was formally opened, bringing together two schools from three sites within an exceptional new building set in newly landscaped grounds. Its exemplary design was recognised through its winning of the 2009 CIOB/ Constructing Excellence South West award for value. Mace took the project from inception through to completion.
A key success of the project has been in creating a wholly new school with its own identity, strength of pride in its own achievements and integration within its community given the inevitable concerns of parents and governors at the outset. At the heart of this success was the inclusive way in which the school was created. Mace worked closely with Children’s Services, the Shadow Board of Governors and the head teachers during the project and formed a 'user group' drawn from parents and teachers within both schools. The range of people on this group meant that all aspects of the new school could be properly considered; from the technical needs of teachers to demographic needs of the local authority, from community needs for sport to advisory needs such as health and parenting.
The pupils also played an essential role in designing the new school. Through the project artist, they set out how the school should feel; welcoming, safe, bright and airy. The school is designed in a tricorn arrangment with classroom wings set around a central hall. The design helps to create an intimate feel and gives a high level of flexibility in use.
