Information

The new Avenue School provides special schooling for 90 of Reading's most severely disabled children from nursery to post 16 years of age. It is for students that have a mixture of severe autism spectrum (ALD) and multiple physical learning difficulties (MPLD). The specially designed and fitted-out classrooms are arranged in age group pairs around a central space containing the hall, performance space, dining area and library. The opposite side of the ground floor contains the specialist support functions, such as the hydrotherapy pools, sensory studios, physiotherapy, craft and food technology.

All of the school's operations on the ground floor are access controlled and configured to provide a safe and secure environment for the teaching of these very challenging children. Outside they have separate secure play areas for each classroom and a large playing field area, containing a mobility trail, gardens and shrubbery. On the first and second floor of the building naturally ventilated offices have been provided for approximately 240 of Reading's educated support staff, as well as a centralised training centre for their teaching and education staff.

For Mace Group's team this project represented a perfect opportunity to
demonstrate the integrated benefits of a truly multidisciplinary
service.
