Architectural tours of London continue at Mace Living

21/09/2009

After a successful tour around Piccadilly in June, the Mace Living team hosted another tour on the 10 September around the Elephant and Castle area of London, once again led by architect and lecturer Benedict O'Looney.

The tour provided guests with an interesting glimpse into both old and new developments around Southwark. The area is experiencing a significant amount of regeneration work as a result of being three years into Southwark Council's ten year plan to almost completely rebuild Elephant and Castle.

Guests from EPR, Child Graddon Lewis, Make, Accord, Dexter Moren, Pocket Living and Poplar HARCA, were treated to views of Victorian architecture such as Reverend Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle together with a look at more recent developments such as Hamilton's 43-storey Strata building, which is currently under construction.

A few more stops were made along the way visiting Erno Goldfinger's 1960's building for London County Council and more modern buildings by Grimshaw and CZWG and the Heygate Estate, part of the largest system built housing project in the world that is soon to be demolished.

The last stop on the tour was the Crampton Street mixed-use development where designer Nik Randall from Spacecraft Architects gave a brief overview of the scheme, which was completed in 2005 and given a ‘New Homes Award' in 2008.
