Mace Plus recently welcomed the first group of students to its Bridge Academy site as part of an inclusion and out-reach programme.
The 20 foundation level construction students from nearby Hackney Community College were welcomed by project manager Mike Armstrong's site team and given an induction before splitting into four groups for a careers carousel involving key members of the Mace Plus team explaining the commercial, mechanical and electrical, project management and planning elements of construction.
After digesting all the relevant information the students were led out for a two hour tour around the live site, following a pre-arranged safe route. The students stopped at various points of interest to receive extra technical information and interesting facts from Mike and the Bridge team and were impressed to discover that the academy's roof material was made from recycled tyres.
After the tour which took them from the basement to the roof terrace, the students joined the contractors in the site canteen to gain a true taste of work on a live building site.
After lunch, Mace Sustain's social inclusion manager Gez Carr entertained the students with a quiz based on the information they had received during the visit. All the students were given a Mace USB stick and after a tense tie-breaker, the quiz winner was presented with a book on construction design. The students left the site full of enthusiasm and eager to embark on their careers in construction.
Mace Plus has two more site visits planned before completion, giving local students further insights into the construction industry in general and The Bridge Academy in particular.
