Mace Plus managers become teachers for a day

05/09/2009

On 15th July, a duo from Mace Plus became 'Sirs' for the day following an invitation from Garth Hill College to provide a presentation and interactive exercise on the various roles of construction in aid of the college's technical enterprise week'.

Construction and commercial managers on the project, Harish Raghwani and Ryan King, went back to school for the day to give 220 14-15 year old students an insight into Mace and the construction industry. Following a presentation on Mace Group, the pupils were divided into two main groups, with each group split into project teams of ten tasked with designing, sketching, quantifying and programming their own lego towers to maximise team profit. The profit was measured against three variables: height, time to build and number of lego pieces used, whilst details of each team's project proposal were captured within a contract document. The teams were allotted half an hour to submit the document to client Ryan and Harish Developments Ltd and penalties were rewarded for any inaccuracies within the contract document and late completion of the tower.

The Mace Plus team at Garth Hill then awarded book voucher prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams in both sessions, where the highest amount of profit was generated on the towers. The most profit gained was £77,000, for a fast-built but short tower.

Mace Plus' project manager on Garth Hill, Alistair Kendall said: "Integrating and involving the students with the construction of their new educational facility is important to us. Hopefully some of the information presented to them will ignite sufficient interest so that construction will become the place for their future careers."

Meanwhile, Harish and Ryan were delighted to act as project ambassadors and one of the first gateways to the world of construction for students at the college.

Ryan said: "There were some exceptionally talented students participating in the activity. The level of enthusiasm and commitment was varied, but each team brought something innovative to the table. Most importantly, all of the students Garth Hill will now join our industry; better still, Mace!"

Mace Plus then donated ten sets of lego at the end of the days' activities, to help the college's technology department deliver its syllabus for the 2009-10 academic year. In addition to this, the project team intend to run further careers talks and activities during the winter term, to sustain good relationships with its client Bracknell Forest Borough Council.
